Reviews
My mother was at Schofield as a rehab patient after a bout with pneumonia. I was fully aware of her physical and mental condition when she was admitted to Schofield. First of all I would like to say I am well aware of the difficulty health care facilities have in obtaining quality workers at this time. However, this was not an excuse for the negligence and sometimes illegal care which my mother received at Schofield. This was not the case with everyone who came in contact with my mother. There were several wonderful professionals. Unfortunately, there were so many incompetent, uncaring individuals who spoiled things for the health care workers who truly cared about the patients. In the beginning of her stay, due to the staffing shortage, we were more than willing to be there everyday to feed her lunch and dinner and we gladly attempted to get her ready for bed. There were no supplies in the bathroom and we were scolded for getting a wash cloth and towel from the linen room and from that time on we brought up supplies from home and laundered everything Schofield should have provided. That didn’t bother me as much as the fact that on several occasions, we arrived to find my mother never changed from when we left her the night before. She was never moved from chair to bed and sat in the same soiled clothes all night. One day my son went up to see her in the morning. Upon arriving in her room, he found her sleeping with her medication cup overturned on her lap and pills spilled. They were still there several hours later. The “professional” who gave out the meds should have watched her swallow her medication and not just left them with a patient with dementia. During a meeting with heads of the various departments, I made it clear that I wanted to bring her home ASAP and would appreciate the social worker starting all necessary paperwork. As she walked us out, she assured us she would do it that afternoon or at the latest the very next morning (Wed). I assumed she was going to do her job, but I was wrong. By Thursday when I hadn’t heard anything, I called and left several messages and finally late Thursday afternoon she assured me everything was completed. Unfortunately, the papers were filled out wrong and due to her mistake and hers alone, my mother was not released until the following Tues, even though she had received no physical or occupational therapy on Sat-Mon. When I finally got my mother home, I saw the full impact of the horrible negligence my mother received at the hands of the health care workers at this awful facility. Her skin was absolutely raw and caused her a great deal of pain. Having cared for her for four years, I was well aware of her skin condition (normal and healthy) before Schofield. It was a travesty and I could get emotional now thinking of her spending the last weeks of her life in so much pain and it didn’t have to be. I have NEVER written a negative review about anything before, but in good conscience, I could not keep this terrible experience to myself.
